You would have to check your local ordinances. In my village in Ohio it is legal if you are using the fire to prepare food.

Just call the business number for your city Fire Dept and ask they will tell you. Its best to have either an extingisher near by, or a shovel and some dirt ready to help put it out if you need to. If its allowed make sure you extinguish before you go to sleep ok. Your call will also let them know that your doing this so if any neighbors call in a report they know your doing a back yard thing and can call instead of show up with lights and sirens because a neighbor thought your home was on fire.
Things Ive seen done that were wrong in a by fire.
Too close to trees, or brush, or the roof or the tent, or chemical storage.
if its not big and in danger to anyone then its fine
